Ten Problems Applied Wisdom has solved concerning counseling questions and issues.
4. Problem: How many weeks do I need to meet with my counselor and how do I know when it is time to quit?
Answer: This is a very good question and Applied Wisdom has solved this problem in several ways. First, we do a confidential intake to learn about an individuals' past and what has happened along their life span to where they are today. Second, we run a Temperament Analysis Profile and begin using the information to teach each counselee and their families about their "hidden needs" and provide real solutions to very real problems. Third, after several weeks of receiving and doing their homework assignments, the client leaves with a typed report of suggestions on how to recognize the signals that lead to inappropriate behavior and how to make good choices in dealing with their emotions, etc. A detailed, step-by-step plan is designed, reviewed with the client, and implemented. The average number of weeks most clients need to meet with their counselor is between 6 and 8 weeks, 50 minutes (one session) per week.
5. Problem: What about the spiritual part of a person? Many counselors do not address the spiritual part of mankind when meeting with clients.
Answer: Applied Wisdom is VERY interested in a client's spiritual situation and we firmly believe that the spiritual part of a person is the most important. Applied Wisdom has solved this problem in a number of ways. First, we do not preach to our clients. If they desire a bible study, then one will be scheduled after hours at no cost. Second, Applied Wisdom desires to help people in every major area we are qualified to address. In fact, we like to address every major area of a person's life, the body (physical well being), and spiritual (mind, will, and emotion). We are not talking about religion here, but your relationships, knowledge, experience, and understanding.
6. Problem: I work odd hours/shifts, how can we work out a schedule that works for everyone?
Answer: Applied Wisdom has solved this problem by offering flexible days and hours to meet with a client. We offer days, evenings, and Saturdays, if needed. We work closely with our clients to make counseling as convenient for them as possible.
7. Problem: There seems to be a "stigma" on people who go to counseling. How do I overcome people's perceptions about counseling?
Answer: Much of the "stigma" of going to a counselor or mental health professional comes from Hollywood and the many shows and movies depicting counselees as being ignorant or crazy. Many Americans today have no problem going to a counselor for help. In fact, many people have made a "practice" of seeing a counselor on a regular basis, often to learn about themselves and their loved ones, before things get out-of-hand or become a problem later. This is called pre-emptive counseling. This practice is much more accepted today, especially with Christian Counseling. Counseling is a great way to avoid potential problems or help correct problems after they occur.
8. Problem: How do we know if we are making progress and how much progress?
Answer: Great question. Applied Wisdom has solved this problem by giving homework assignments to each individual in the session, each week. The homework assignment sheets are brought back to the next session each week (all previous sheets) and are reviewed by the counselor to insure the assignments are being completed, the progress is moving forward, and that positive results are occurring. In fact, this time in the session can actually be fun and done quickly.
9. Problem: I don't want any confidential information being discovered by others.
Answer: Talking with a counselor is much like talking to an attorney or a doctor. The information that is shared with them is, by law, confidential. Building a relationship of trust with your counselor is important. The counselors of Applied Wisdom are not only committed to legal and ethical standards, but are committed to the Word of God and living a moral lifestyle.
10. Problem: I am embarrassed and scared to share my problems with a stranger. How do I overcome this fear?
Answer: At Applied Wisdom we understand it is difficult and takes time for clients to open up. Some will open up more quickly than others. We have created an atmosphere and developed techniques to ensure the client and counselor feel comfortable from the very first session. It usually takes one to two sessions for all parties to begin to feel at ease.
